Not Today, Satan: Standing Firm With Ephesians 6 and James 4:7
“Not Today, Satan” is more than a slogan on a shirt. It is a posture the Bible describes in plain language.
Resist, and he will flee
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7 (KJV)
Notice the order. Submission to God comes first. We do not resist in our own strength; we resist because we belong to someone stronger.
Stay alert
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)
Peter pairs two things: watchfulness and steadfastness. He also reminds us that we are not alone. Believers around the world face the same battles.
Put on the armour
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11 (KJV)
Paul says to stand. Not to charge ahead and not to hide. Standing firm means staying where God has placed you and not giving ground to fear, temptation or discouragement.
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:17 (KJV)
Notice that the only offensive piece of armour in the list is the Word of God.
How Jesus answered temptation
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4 (KJV)
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he did not argue or improvise. He answered with Scripture. That is the model.
When standing firm makes you unpopular
Jesus told his followers to expect resistance from the world.
“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.”
John 15:18 (KJV)
That is the idea behind our Globally Hated design. It is not about wanting to be disliked. It is about being at peace when faith costs you something, because you are in good company.
The Good Shepherd on the back
Our Not Today Satan designs feature the Good Shepherd standing over a defeated wolf. It is a picture of protection: the shepherd guards the sheep. We wanted something that points to Christ and not to the enemy.
A simple practice
When temptation shows up this week, answer it the way Jesus did: with Scripture, spoken out loud. Pick one verse from this post and memorize it.
