What to Say When Someone Asks About Your Shirt: 5 Simple Ways to Share Your Faith
It happens at the gas station, the gym and the grocery store. Someone reads your shirt and asks, “What does that mean?” Here is how to be ready.
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”
1 Peter 3:15 (KJV)
Why it matters
A question about your shirt is a small, low-pressure door. The person chose to ask. You do not have to manufacture a conversation; you only have to answer well. Peter's instruction is to be ready, not to be perfect.
1. Keep your answer short
You do not need a sermon. One honest sentence works: “It is about a guy named Jonah who ran from God and ended up in a fish, and what it taught me about obeying.”
2. Tell your own story
People can argue with a doctrine, but they cannot argue with what happened to you. Share one real moment where faith changed something.
3. Speak with grace
“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
Colossians 4:6 (KJV)
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up strife.”
Proverbs 15:1 (KJV)
Be kind, even if the question sounds like a challenge. Your tone is part of your testimony.
4. Ask a question back
“Is that something you have thought about?” Listening is one of the most respectful things you can do.
5. Offer something small
Invite them to church, send them a verse, or offer to pray. Then let it go. You are planting, not forcing.
Sample answers for our designs
- Obey God: “It is about Jonah. He ran from God, and I used to be the same way.”
- Not Today Satan: “It is about the Good Shepherd protecting his sheep. I wear it as a reminder that I am not on my own.”
- Globally Hated: “It is from John 15:18. Jesus said the world would not always like us, and that is okay.”
- From My Cold Dead Hands: It is inspired by Revelation 12:11, which says believers overcame “by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
- Skullgotha: “It is about dying to yourself and living for Christ. After death, life begins.”
If it turns into an argument
Not every question is friendly. If someone wants a fight, you are allowed to stay calm, say thank you, and move on. You are not required to win. Jesus often answered questions with a question, and sometimes he said nothing at all.
Wear it, then live it
A shirt gets the conversation started. Your life finishes it. Pick a design that means something to you and be ready to say why.
