Run From God, End Up in the Whale: The Story Behind the Obey God Hoodie

Jonah got a clear call from God and ran the other way. He bought a ticket, boarded a boat, and tried to put as much distance between himself and God's instructions as he could. Then the storm hit.

The call Jonah did not want

God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, a city Jonah had no interest in helping. Instead of arguing or negotiating, Jonah simply left.

“But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of the LORD.”
Jonah 1:3 (KJV)

Notice how many steps down he took: down to Joppa, down into the ship, and eventually down into the sea. Running from God is rarely one big decision. It is a series of small ones that each feel reasonable at the time.

Three days in the belly of the fish

“Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”
Jonah 1:17 (KJV)

You can't outrun God

Most of us know the story as a children's tale. It is really a story about stubbornness and mercy. Jonah heard exactly what God wanted and decided he knew better. God did not give up on him. The fish was not only a consequence; it was the place where Jonah finally stopped running and prayed.

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?”
Psalm 139:7 (KJV)

David asked the question Jonah learned the hard way. There is nowhere to go where God is not already there.

The prayer that turned it around

From inside the fish, Jonah finally cried out:

“I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.”
Jonah 2:2 (KJV)

Look at where the prayer ends:

“But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.”
Jonah 2:9 (KJV)

That line is the whole point. Salvation is not something Jonah earned by running well or by turning around perfectly. It belongs to the Lord.

A second chance

“And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.”
Jonah 3:1-2 (KJV)

God did not cancel the assignment. He gave Jonah the same one again. If you have been running, that is good news: the door is not closed. The call is still there, and so is the mercy.

Why we made the Obey God Hoodie

Almost everyone has a thing they have been running from: a calling, a conversation, a habit, a decision. The Obey God Hoodie is for the person who is done running. It is a reminder to turn around and do the thing you already know God has asked of you.

It is a heavyweight 10oz fleece hoodie in a relaxed fit, with ribbed cuffs and hem, a kangaroo pocket and reinforced stitching, built for cold mornings. The story of Jonah is printed on it so it can start conversations. If you want a lighter option, the Obey God Tee carries the same message.

A question to sit with this week

What is the one thing you know you have been avoiding? Write it down. Pray about it. Then do the next small step today. You do not need to fix everything. Jonah's turnaround started with one honest prayer.
